Choose the best way to install Windows 11

There are different ways to install Windows 11 on your PC, depending on whether you want to upgrade from Windows 10 or perform a clean install on a new or used PC. Here are some of the options available:

Use Windows Update in Settings (recommended)

If you are upgrading from Windows 10, we recommend you wait until you are notified through Windows Update that the upgrade is ready for your device. This is the easiest and safest way to install Windows 11 without losing any data or settings. To use this method, follow these steps:

  • Open Settings and go to Update & Security > Windows Update.

  • Click on Check for updates and wait for the scan to complete.

  • If you see the message "The Windows 11 upgrade is ready for your device", click on Download and install.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade process.

Note: If you do not see the message, it means that your device is not eligible or ready for the upgrade yet. You can check the PC Health Check app to see why your device is not compatible or ready, and what you can do to fix it.

Use the Installation Assistant to upgrade

If you do not want to wait for Windows Update to notify you, you can use the Installation Assistant to manually upgrade your Windows 10 PC to Windows 11. The Installation Assistant is a tool that downloads and installs Windows 11 on your device. To use this method, follow these steps:

  • Download the Installation Assistant from .

  • Run the tool and accept the license terms.

  • The tool will check if your device meets the system requirements and has enough disk space.

  • If everything is OK, click on Install now to start the upgrade process.

  • Your PC will restart several times during the installation. Do not turn off your PC or interrupt the process.

Create Windows 11 installation media

If you want to install Windows 11 on a new or used PC, or perform a clean install on your current PC, you can create Windows 11 installation media using a USB flash drive or a DVD. This method allows you to boot from the installation media and start the installation process. To use this method, follow these steps:

  • Download the media creation tool from .

  • Run the tool and accept the license terms.

  • Select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and click Next.

  • Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit) of Windows 11 that you want to install and click Next.

  • Select USB flash drive or ISO file as the media type and click Next.

  • If you chose USB flash drive, insert a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space and select it from the list. If you chose ISO file, choose a location to save the file.

  • Click Next to start downloading and creating the installation media.

How to boot from the installation media

Once you have created the installation media, you need to boot from it to start the installation process. To do this, you need to change the boot order in the BIOS or UEFI settings of your PC. The exact steps may vary depending on your PC model and manufacturer, but here are some general steps:

  • Insert the USB flash drive or DVD into your PC and restart it.

  • Press a specific key (such as F2, F12, Del, or Esc) repeatedly during startup to enter the BIOS or UEFI settings menu. You may see a message on the screen indicating which key to press.

  • Find the boot order or boot priority option and move the USB flash drive or DVD to the top of the list.

  • Save and exit the settings menu. Your PC will reboot and load from the installation media.

How to choose the installation type

After booting from the installation media, you will see a setup screen where you can choose how to install Windows 11. You have two options:

  • Upgrade: This option will keep your personal files, apps, and settings from your previous version of Windows. This is recommended if you are upgrading from Windows 10 on your current PC.

  • Custom: This option will erase everything on your hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows 11. This is recommended if you are installing Windows 11 on a new or used PC, or if you want to perform a clean install on your current PC.
