Once I got trackmania and played it, I was hooked. I got my own copy from a local game store (Pavilion in the mall of all places, lol). Now it wasn't as easy for me to find people to play it with. And so I started playing it on my own. I was also very adamant about not buying any online copies, and even though I was only 15 at the time, I was still pretty OK about using a paypal account. I remember I had a bunch of copies on my harddrive because I was determined to get it cracked. I would play it, people would ask me if I had it cracked, I would tell them no. But the reality was that I hadn't cracked it. My first cracked copy was from the Horse Racing Connection. It was amazing. I then downloaded the source code, and started playing with the help of an old friend and his friend. Their friend was the cracker. He had cracked the game, and they were showing me how to do it. We made a few changes, and now the game worked perfectly. I went to the Horse Racing Connection and bought the game. Now it was fun to play with actual people. I was able to play on his map, and I was able to help him find his way around the map. It was fun, and it was also very frustrating at times. It was like playing with a pack of 6 year olds (lol).
By now, the community was getting into the forums for the first time. I was only familiar with the forums of other games, but here I could get to know some of the people who were soon to become my friends. The forums were a gold mine of information about the newest developments in the game. In the beginning, there were many programs out there that could crack the game, but there was one very important problem with these: they were all illegal. There were some sites that would offer info on how to crack the game and you would have to pay a fee to download the program. Then there was always a long process of uninstalling the program from your system and re-installing it later with a cracked version of the game. By now, I had all my money going into the game. I figured I would crack it, but I was going to do it right. I was not going to run a program like I had before. The problem was that I had no idea how the protection worked.
On November 28, 2006, Microsoft released the first beta version of Windows Vista to public beta testers. The game was then removed from the Windows Vista beta program on February 24, 2007, but was made available again for free on February 28, 2007.[20] The game was removed again on May 7, 2007. Starforce later released a statement that the game will be available for free again starting on May 23, 2007, with no copy protection included. The game was released again on May 25, 2007 with the latest patch version 2.0.2, and the installation file is an exact physical copy of the retail version. The game has not been cracked, though people have used cracks to patch the game.
In April 2008, Stardock released an entirely new version of the game, which has slightly different features from the original game. This update included the ability to play multiplayer online. It also added the ability to save and load games. New features included were secret alien abilities and the ability to build a base. The update required all previous saves to be played through again. The only notable change from previous versions of the game was the ability to start the game automatically with mouse and keyboard input enabled, without the need for a copy protected retail disc. 827ec27edc
