An earlier study by our group showed that engineering faculty use different strategies to mitigate student resistance to active learning. The present study uses data from 17 interviews to further explore the common and unique strategies that respondents use to mitigate student resistance to active learning. A key finding is that respondents use strategies to mitigate student resistance that are not generalizable. Instead, strategy use is highly variable across faculty. Thus, active learning is not yet standard practice at all engineering programs. Another key finding is that strategies to mitigate student resistance to active learning are most commonly used in First-Year Engineering courses. This finding may be a result of the fact that these courses are the first opportunity to teach students the material and therefore the easiest places to introduce active learning.
Abstract: Active learning (AL) strategies, such as class discussion and engagement activities, have been widely adopted by universities and colleges in response to students' preference for group activities and lectures. However, some university and college instructors are reluctant to adopt active learning methods for various reasons, such as fear of student resistance to AL. We present an in-depth analysis of interview data from 17 engineering professors across the United States on the ways they use strategies to mitigate student resistance to active learning in their undergraduate engineering courses. We found that instructors used different strategies to mitigate student resistance to active learning, which were not generalizable across faculty. Instead, strategy use was highly variable across faculty. Therefore, active learning is not yet standard practice at all engineering programs. The two most commonly used strategies to mitigate student resistance to AL were (1) using formative assessment and (2) using small-group activities.
I am running a PC with Windows 7 and Adobe Photoshop CS6. I am wondering how to end the trial period and convert to a full copy of Photoshop CS6. I tried closing down Photoshop, which produced a message telling me to return the disk. I did that, but the same message returned. How can I end this?
