\"Over the last several decades, metaphysics has been a particularly active and productive area of philosophy. Alyssa Ney's Metaphysics: An Introduction offers a superb introduction to this exciting field, covering the issues, claims, and arguments on fundamental topics, such as existence and persistence, material object, causation, modality, and the nature of metaphysics. While the presentation is admirable in its clarity and accessibility, Ney does not shy away from sophisticated problems and theories, many of them from recent developments in the field, and she succeeds in infusing them with immediacy and relevance. The reader has a sense of being a fellow companion on Ney's journey of exploration into some fascinating metaphysical territories. This is the best introduction to contemporary metaphysics that I know.\" - Jaegwon Kim, Brown University, USA
\"An excellent introduction... some very complicated and important work is made accessible to students, without either assuming background knowledge or over-simplifying.\" - Carrie Jenkins, University of British Columbia, Canada
\"This book will serve as an excellent introduction to contemporary metaphysics. The issues and arguments are well chosen and explained with a carefulness and rigor ideal for beginning students. The teaching-oriented materials, which include a helpful overview of elementary logic, are useful additions to Ney's expert discussion.\" - Sam Cowling, Denison University, USA
\"One of the best introductions to metaphysics available. It covers a wide range of contemporary topics in metaphysics, giving a clear, accessible yet substantive account of the key questions and issues and providing an up to date account of the current debate. It's the text I'd choose for my own course on the subject.\" - L.A. Paul, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA
Each chapter begins with a question: Can We Have Knowledge How are Beliefs Justified What is the mind Contemporary philosophers with opposing viewpoints are then paired together to argue their position and raise problems with conflicting standpoints. Alongside an up-to-date introduction to a core philosophical stance, each contributor provides a critical response to their opponent and clear explanation of their view.
Discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter to guide further discussion. With chapters covering core questions surrounding religious beliefs, scientific knowledge, truth, being and reality, this is a comprehensive introduction to debates lying at the heart of what we know, how we know it and the nature of the world we live in.
Reader Alfred MacDonald called my attention to this old blog post and wondered whether I might solicit something similar here for various subfields of philosophy. So let's start with recommendations for introductions to metaphysics and/or epistemology. Don't just name a text, but say something about why you think it's particularly notable or valuable.
For those who are looking for a review of the subject of metaphysics, this book will be a blessing. It offers a healthy dose of traditional Thomism in contemporary idiom and will seem, I think, quite refreshing. For those who have never studied the subject before, the book will serve well, but one should note that it is not an entry-level introduction to philosophy as a whole. One will have done well to have gotten some experience with logic and with the theory of knowledge beforehand, and perhaps a general introduction to the history of philosophy, if only to appreciate how hard won these perennial insights have been.
Another subdiscipline of philosophy in which work on artefacts has appeared is analytic metaphysics. In this subdiscipline, traditional metaphysical inquiries into the nature, constitution and categorisation of reality are made by using the methods of analytic philosophy, such as formalisation and conceptual analysis. Philosophers have discussed the nature and categorisation of artefacts ( Elder 2004; Baker 2007; Thomasson 2007b ) and a volume has been published in which artefacts are approached from the perspective of metaphysics and cognitive science ( Margolis and Laurence 2007 ). In this work, philosophy of technology seems not to play a detectable role. With the collection of papers we present in this special issue, we aim to strengthen artefacts as a topic for philosophical research. In particular, we want to start a cross-disciplinary exchange and interaction between philosophy of technology and analytic metaphysics. In this introduction, we set the stage for this exchange. We first present the way in which artefacts have typically been studied in analytic philosophy. Then, we sketch some promising, very recent developments regarding the philosophy of artefacts. Finally, we give an overview of the papers in this issue.
N2 - How do we come to know metaphysical truths How does metaphysical inquiry work Are metaphysical debates substantial These are the questions which characterize metametaphysics. This book, the first systematic student introduction dedicated to metametaphysics, discusses the nature of metaphysics - its methodology, epistemology, ontology and our access to metaphysical knowledge. It provides students with a firm grounding in the basics of metametaphysics, covering a broad range of topics in metaontology such as existence, quantification, ontological commitment and ontological realism. Contemporary views are discussed along with those of Quine, Carnap and Meinong. Going beyond the metaontological debate, thorough treatment is given to novel topics in metametaphysics, including grounding, ontological dependence, fundamentality, modal epistemology, intuitions, thought experiments and the relationship between metaphysics and science. The book will be an essential resource for those studying advanced metaphysics, philosophical methodology, metametaphysics, epistemology and the philosophy of science.
