Who was Imam Al-Ghazali and why is he important Imam Al-Ghazali was a Muslim scholar, jurist, theologian, philosopher, and mystic who lived in the 11th and 12th centuries CE. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Islam and one of the greatest renewers of the faith. He is also known by various titles, such as Hujjat al-Islam (the Proof of Islam), Zayn al-Din (the Ornament of Religion), and Mujaddid (the Reviver).
Imam Al-Ghazali was born in 1058 CE in Tus, a town near Mashhad in eastern Iran. He received his early education in his hometown, then in Jurjan, and finally in Nishapur, where he studied under the famous scholar Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni. He excelled in various fields of Islamic sciences, such as jurisprudence, theology, logic, philosophy, and ethics. He also mastered the art of debate and rhetoric, and became known for his sharp intellect and eloquence.
In 1091 CE, he was appointed as a professor at the prestigious Nizamiyya College in Baghdad, where he taught for four years. He also served as a religious adviser to the Seljuk vizier Nizam al-Mulk, who was his patron and friend.
